Let me know what you think: ashbass com. Note that it might be preferable to break the connection to ground on the two non-master volume pots in the diagram above.
If left connected, you may get a muddy sound as the non-master pot and the master pot will combine resistance.
Removing the grounds from the non-master vol controls will ensure no tone loss but will also mean that you can't turn either pickup all the way off when in the middle position. Of course, there're the other two positions for that. Here are some small MP3s that demonstrate the difference between Parallel and Series wiring. You will first hear the neck and bridge pickups in parallel, then the neck and bridge pickups in series.
No settings were changed for each part of the recordings except to switch from parallel to series coupling of the pickups. More info here Here are some images I fixed up to show the various wirings that I've noodled around with on my Les Pauls and Flying Vs.There are two humbucker pickups and we will wire both of them up the same way. This allows you to split the pickups or wire them in other unique ways. We are just going to worry about the standard way for right now.
You want to solder together the Red and the White wires and tape them off. You want to solder together the Green and the Bare wires. This is your ground wire. The Black wire is the Hot wire. Fig 1. The Gibson Les Paul circuit gives each pickup its own Volume and Tone control, and now that we have the Hot and the Ground wire from each pickup we can wire them to the Volume control the same as we would a single coil pickup. If you hold the Volume pot upside down with the tabs pointing down we can number them 1, 2, and 3.
Solder the Hot wire of the neck pickup to Tab 1 of the neck Volume control. Solder a wire from Tab 3 of the neck Volume control to the back of the neck Volume control. Solder the Ground wire from the neck pickup to the back of the neck Volume control. Do the same thing for the bridge pickup and the bridge Volume control. Fig 2. Look at the bottom of the Toggle switch and arrange it so there are three tabs on the left side and one tab on the right.
We can number the tabs on the left from top to bottom, 1, 2, and 3. Solder a wire from Tab 2 of the neck Volume control to Tab 1 of the three-way switch and solder a wire from Tab 2 of the bridge Volume control to Tab 3 of the three-way switch. Solder a wire from Tab 2 of the three-way switch to the tip tab of the Output Jack. We will leave the sleeve tab of the output jack alone for now.
Solder a wire from the only tab on the right side of the three-way switch to the back of the neck Volume control. Fig 3. Solder a wire from Tab 1 of the neck Volume control to Tab 3 of the neck Tone control. Solder the capacitor from Tab 2 of the neck Tone control to the back of the neck Tone control. Do the same for the bridge Volume and Tone controls. Solder a wire from the back of the bridge Tone control to the back of the neck Tone control.

This project also applies to most other guitars with dual humbuckers, individual master volume and master tone knobs for each pickup, and a 3-way pickup selector switch. The problem or not. It has changed slightly over time—Gibson used several different tone caps and experimented with tone-pot wiring—but essentially, modern Les Pauls employ the original wiring.
One thing Gibson did not change was the concept of coupled volume pots. You know how this works: With an independent pair of controls for each pickup and a 3-way toggle switch, you can dial in your lead volume and tone using the bridge pickup, set up a rhythm tone using the neck pickup, and then quickly change from lead to rhythm and back using the 3-way switch.
This works great—two preset sounds at your fingertips. But Les Paul players know what happens when you use the middle position of the 3-way switch: The pickups are wired together in parallel, so when both pickups are engaged, rolling down the volume of one even slightly while leaving the other fully open makes the latter much louder than its mate. Even worse, backing down just one of the volumes to zero shuts off the entire guitar.Gibson Les Paul: 1950s Wiring Vs. Modern
Why is this? Because the two volume controls are not decoupled, they interact. The other camp regards this interaction as a system error and tries to eliminate it. You must let your ears decide. Swap it out. This is how some Rickenbacker guitars and early Fender Jazz basses are wired. First, study the wiring diagram shown here. It represents the modern factory wiring typically found in Les Pauls. The black wires are ground; the white wires are the hot connections from the pickups and to the output jack.
Now, simply interchange connections 3 and 2 on both volume pots, including the tone cap connections. Leave all connections on the tone pots untouched. Time to network? This results in dramatic treble loss when you roll back the volume. And the treble loss is even worse when the volume pots are wired backwards. You can combat this by adding a treble-bleed network between the input and output of each volume pot.
This usually consists of a small capacitor, often with a resistor in series or parallel. Simply solder the treble-bleed network between lugs 3 and 2 on each volume pot and see if it sounds right to you. As far as capacitor and resistor values, that depends on how much treble you like. A useable range for the cap is from pF to pF; a resistor wired in parallel can range from k ohm to k ohm.
A popular choice for a cap-only solution is pF. For a network solution, many players like a pF cap with a k-ohm resistor wired in parallel. You could start with this and see what sounds best to you. Small silver mica caps sound excellent for this mod.
This treble-bleed network filters bass so the highs are more pronounced. Dirk Wacker lives in Germany and has been a guitar addict since age 5.
