AMD has shown off its new Zen 3 architecture, which will be powering its next generation Ryzen processors. With the Zen 3 architecture, AMD claims it brings the best single threaded performance and gaming performance. Zen 3 will bring higher max boost, a significant IPC uplift and lower latency thanks to a brand new architecture, while keeping its 7nm process, the company announced at a live event on October 8. The new core layout will allow every core to directly access L3 cache, helping to cut latency in gaming.
So, exciting times for AMD. At the event, we finally found out when we can expect the first Zen 3 processors. These are pretty competitive prices compared to AMD's biggest rival, Intel.
However, they do represent a price increase compared to AMD Zen 2 processors, which launched at the following prices:.
This new design is expected to be the product of a shift to 7nm EUV extreme ultraviolet lithography. Topping that off, rumors have suggested that AMD will introduce a new level of simultaneous multithreading in Zen 3 chips that would allow a single core to handle four threads e.
Altogether, we should be looking at Zen 3-based processors with boosted clock speeds paired with increased IPC for a decent performance boost especially in multithreaded workloads over their Zen 2 counterparts all while staying within or below the power budgets of their predecessors.
The potential to keep high performance while lowering the power budget could be especially promising for mobile applications. We should soon be getting the new Zen 3 processors in for review, so we'll be seeing for ourselves just how much of a leap this new architecture provides.

Oh, before we get to all that, you might be wondering why the leap to the Ryzen branding with this generation. Us too. The Ryzen branding was due a desktop range this year, yet AMD has confirmed it'll be the series that makes its way into our gaming PCs instead.
All will be powered by the new and improved Zen 3 architecture. The successor to the incredibly successful and revolutionary Zen 2 architecture that launched inZen 3 is said to be much more than an incremental update—in fact, AMD is promising an "entirely new architecture" with performance to match. An its first official benchmarks point to promising improvements in gaming performance. Of course, we'll have to wait until we get our hands on these chips to really put them to the test.
But in the meantime here's everything we know about Ryzen today. When exactly? The recently disclosed specifications for the Ryzen CPUs point to another great stride in the right direction for AMD, with single-threaded performance once again on the up. Here is a detailed breakdown of the announced specs, and how they compare to the Ryzen chips on the Zen 2 architecture:. As you may have noticed, there isn't any change to core counts. That's because Zen 3 appears to be using the same 7nm process node, or a very similar node at least, to Zen 2, and thus there's seemingly no place to stuff any extra chiplets or cores on the chip dies.
In theory, unifying L3 cache, streamlining memory access, and cutting latency between cores. Yeah, we'll happily take that. So with generational performance well and truly sorted, it's onto facing down the competition. Intel still holds the lead in gaming with its high-end processors, but AMD is offering up some convincing Cinebench R20 single-threaded results that could have its Ryzen 9 X take the lead.
We'll have to test this out for ourselves before we can say for sure, but it's looking good for team red. We weren't expecting any changes to AMD Ryzen's tried and tested pricing strategy with the Ryzen chips, but as it turns out there is a slight change to the program.
The Ryzen 5 XT is the only CPU to be bundled with a cooler, and arguably a less capable one than its predecessor despite the price increase. AMD says on its website that its high-end chips don't come with coolers because they're "optimised for enthusiasts"and it's probably true that most bundled coolers are left by the wayside in favour of liquid-cooled AiO loops. Still, it's a shame to see the otherwise superb Wraith coolers left out this generation, as they were back with the Ryzen refresh this past Summer too.
In the grand scheme of things, these processors are comparably cheap by multi-core CPU standards, and that's thanks to the introduction of a chiplet architecture with Zen 2, and later carried over to the Zen 3 architecture.The goal for AMD is to release laptops that are just as powerful as they are thin using the U-series Ryzen processors, as well as performance-driven notebooks powered by beefier Ryzen 9 H and Ryzen 9 HS chips.
A full range of chips was announced, from the low-end to the high, and many of them are now available, at a variety of prices. In fact, given what we've seen so far, it looks like AMD could soon enjoy a dominating position in the desktop PC market unlike anything we've seen since the Athlon 64 days. Let's cover what we know about Zen 3 so far. Here we can see the full Ryzen product stack, and how the new chips stack up against Intel's Comet Lake. The first big thing you'll notice are the increased Precision Boost clock rates, which now stretch up to 4. However, we also see a broad trend of lower base frequencies for the Ryzen series compared to the previous-gen chips, but that isn't too surprising considering the much higher performance-per-watt that we'll outline below.
AMD obviously leans on its improved IPC rather than raw clock speeds, thus boosting its power efficiency and reducing heat generation. The Ryzen 5 X is the best example of that — despite only a slight reduction to the base frequency, the chip drops to a 65W TDP compared to its predecessor's 95W. What's not as impressive? That means the Ryzen 5 X will be the only Ryzen chip that comes with a cooler in the box. AMD said it decided to skip bundled coolers in higher-TDP models largely because it believes most enthusiasts looking for high-performance chips use custom cooling anyway.
AMD also still specs a mm or greater AIO liquid cooler for the Ryzen 9 and 7 chips, which significantly adds to the overall platform costs. AMD continues to only guarantee its boost frequencies on a single coreand all-core boosts will vary based on the cooling solution, power delivery, and motherboard BIOS.And, they may be revolutionizing the gaming laptop scene with almost the kind of performance that one might expect from desktop processors.

The Pros are now available from multiple retailers in Europe as well as being listed in the US. New leaks suggest that AMD could skip the Ryzen desktop processors altogether, launching its Zen 3-based processors with the Ryzen instead. Still, we will probably see prices increase over last-generation AMD laptopsdue to the fact that AMD's processors will be behind flagship-class laptops like the upcoming Lenovo Yoga Slim 7. However, we can be a bit more specific with our speculation on the desktop lineup. Ryzen is the consumer-level implementation of the newer Zen microarchitecturea complete redesign that marked the return of AMD to the high-end CPU market, offering a product stack able to compete with Intel at every level. Threadripper, which is geared for high end desktops HEDTwasn't developed as part of a business plan or a specific roadmap; instead, a small enthusiast team inside AMD saw an opportunity that something could be developed between the Ryzen and Epyc CPU roadmaps that would put the crown of performance on AMD.
After some progress was made in their spare time, the project was greenlit and put in an official roadmap by CPU features table. APU features table. They were released only to OEM manufacturers in mid LPDDR4 dual-channel. The desktop Ryzen series, based on the Zen 3 microarchitecture, was announced on October 8, The first Ryzen 7X, and X processors debuted in early March and were generally well received by hardware reviewers. Power consumption and heat were found to be highly competitive with Intel, and the included Wraith coolers were generally competitive with higher-priced aftermarket solutions. Ryzen X's multi-threaded performance, in some cases while using Blender or other open-source software, was around four times the performance of the FX, or nearly double that of the i7 K.
One complaint among a subset of reviewers, however, was that Ryzen processors fell behind their Intel counterparts when running older games, or running certain newer games at mainstream resolutions such as p or p. It has been suggested that low threaded applications often result in Ryzen processors being underutilized, producing lower than expected benchmark scores, due to the fact that Zen relies on its core count to make up for its lower IPC rating than that of Kaby Lake.
Windows Update blocks updates from being installed on newer systems running older versions of Windows, though that restriction can be circumvented with an unofficial patch. Although AMD initially announced that Ryzen chipset drivers would not be provided for Windows 7,  its chipset driver packages do in fact list and include them. Full support for Ryzen processors' performance features in Linux requires kernel version 4.
Like nearly all modern high performance microprocessors, Ryzen was susceptible to the "Spectre" vulnerabilities. The vulnerabilities can be mitigated without hardware changes via microcode updates and operating system workarounds, but the mitigations incur a performance penalty.
Launched inZen 2 includes hardware mitigations against the Spectre V4 speculative store bypass vulnerability. Some early shipments of Ryzen series processors produced segmentation faults on certain workloads on Linux, especially while compiling code with GCC. In earlyIsraeli cyber-security consultancy firm CTS Labs stated that they had discovered several major flaws in the Ryzen components ecosystem,  publicly disclosing them after giving AMD 24 hours to respond and raising concerns and questions regarding their legitimacy,   though they were later confirmed by two separate security firms.The support that Cicci and her colleagues provided was outstanding.
We had a few minor things that needed to be adjusted during our trip and we received immediate and prompt service. All questions were addressed quickly and when changes were required, all our requests were met with a willing attitude.
